Burradon Colliery Village History
Burradon is a Tyneside village which developed around a coal mine that existed from 1820 - 1975. It was a typical colliery village of the area in that it was hardly known to outsiders and the pit villagers developed a unique community, culture and hardy way of living. Travel to nearby towns such as Morpeth, Blyth and Newcastle, in the early days of the colliery at least, was difficult and not an everyday occurrence. The colliery communities were largely self-sufficient. But Burradon was often at the forefront of mining community improvements, and controversy, with some remarkable individual events and individuals, most notably the pit disaster of 1860 which killed seventy-six. Start here for a historic timeline of events and developments beginning in 1820. Read about the pre-industrial times such as the building of the Burradon Tower House which is still a much visited site in the village today.
